However, retail still has a long way to catch up with its online counterpart. In a recent blog post on HBR, we get a glimpse of the future of retail in the work done at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prism_Skylabs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prism Skylabs<\/a>. They use a retail store\u2019s security cameras to gather location-based data on its customers, and allows the store owner to plan product placement accordingly. They have a neat dashboard, which presents data in the right context. However, the most usable visualization is the heatmap representation of customer movement across the shop, as shown below.\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13194\" alt=\"heatmap representation\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fusioncharts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/gallery\/blog\/2014\/06\/heatmap-representation.jpeg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/heatmap-representation.jpeg 640w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/heatmap-representation-150x84.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>\r\n<p class=\"clearfix\">Retailers are excited about the possibilities this kind of location analytics gives them, and look at it as a way to \u201cmove as our customers move.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_right_way_to_show_visualizations_to_a_CXO\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hurree.co\/how-to-visualize-data-top-tips-and-best-practice?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The right way to show visualizations to a CXO<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\nThis is an interesting article on how to use data visualization for C-suite executives. The advice may be open to debate, but it makes a convincing point. It says to \u2018never bring a data visualization into a meeting with a top executive to summarize your findings.\u2019 Instead it suggests \u2018to just display the data and have the audience discover [insights] on their own.\u2019 It says to have 10 minutes where everyone stares at the data and discovers their own insghts.\r\n\r\nI wonder though if executives would have the time to spend 10 minutes staring at the data to glean insights. Wouldn\u2019t they rather have the work done before the meeting itself, and use the meeting to discuss outcomes? Read it for yourself, and decide.\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_the_love_of_venn_diagrams\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/BoApPIIIUAAsLpb.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">For the love of venn diagrams<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\nFinally, here\u2019s a venn diagram that promotes the usefulness of venn diagrams. If you have just 5 minutes, you can head over <a href=\"https:\/\/ijnet.org\/en\/story\/alberto-cairos-tips-more-effective-data-visualization%E2%80%8B\"> ijnet <\/a>and read the notes from the talk, but if you have some time, I highly recommend watching the video itself. Cairo is one of the influential thinkers in data visualization today, and you\u2019ll get a lot of food for thought from his talk.
